SOR 1716 Series Metl-Guard / Visi-Guard Desiccant Dryers 12 SCFM
SOR Controls Group / King 1716 Series Metl-Guard and Visi-Guard Desiccant Dryers are engineered for critical point-of-use compressed air applications that demand ultra-dry or oil-free gas, including pneumatic instrumentation, analytical laboratories, laser optics, and precision environmental chambers. Rated for 12 SCFM @ 100 psig (340 L/min @ 7 bar), these dryers capture vapor-phase contaminants that mechanical coalescing filters cannot remove. Available in Visi-Guard transparent acrylic housings with protective shatter-guards for 360° visual inspection of desiccant color change, or Metl-Guard all-aluminum housings for severe industrial and chemical environments. Configurable with Silica Gel (SG-1, -50 °F dew point), Molecular Sieve (MS-1, -100 °F dew point), or Activated Carbon (AC-1, ≤ 0.5 ppm oil vapor).
Dedicated point-of-use desiccant drying rated for 12 SCFM @ 100 psig (340 L/min @ 7 bar / 20 m³/hr)
Removes vapor-phase moisture and hydrocarbon oil vapors that cannot be eliminated by coalescing filtration
Visi-Guard (1716-10): Transparent acrylic housing with protective metal shatter-guard for direct visual desiccant monitoring
Metl-Guard (1716-6): All-aluminum pressure vessel engineered for harsh industrial atmospheres and aggressive solvent vapors

Operational & Safety Notes
A coalescing filter must precede the desiccant dryer to prevent bulk liquid contamination of desiccant pores.
Silica gel beads indicate exhaustion by changing color from deep blue to light pink.
Use Metl-Guard (1716-6) when phosphate ester synthetic lubricants or aggressive solvent vapors are present.
Desiccant dryers are non-cycling chemical adsorption units optimized for point-of-use instrumentation protection.
Product Description
Standard particulate and coalescing filters are highly effective at capturing liquid droplets and solid particles, but they cannot remove water or oil in vapor phase. In pneumatic control loops, gas analyzers, and optical purge systems, evaporated moisture and oil vapor condense into liquids upon pressure and temperature drops, causing instrument fouling, calibration drift, and corrosion. The SOR / King Filters 1716 Series Desiccant Dryers resolve this by providing point-of-use chemical adsorption.
The 1716-10 Visi-Guard configuration features a heavy-duty transparent acrylic housing enclosed by a slotted metal shatter-guard, allowing operators to continuously monitor the color-indicating desiccant bed without taking the dryer out of service. The 1716-6 Metl-Guard model utilizes an all-aluminum housing that resists synthetic compressor lubricants (phosphate esters), chlorinated solvents, and high mechanical shock.
Guarantees ultra-dry compressed air for pneumatic transmitters, positioners, chromatographic analyzers, and purge systems
Eliminates internal condensation in pneumatic signal lines and freezing in low-temperature or outdoor installations
Choice of 3 specialized desiccant media tailored specifically for water vapor adsorption or hydrocarbon oil vapor stripping
Convenient desiccant bed servicing with simple top-loading cartridge/refill architecture
Heavy-duty cast aluminum manifold head with integral 1/2" NPT ports and pre-drilled mounting provisions

Application & Engineering Guidelines
Always install a coalescing pre-filter (such as the SOR / King Filters U200 Series) upstream of the desiccant dryer. Liquid water and oil droplets coating the desiccant granules will foul the microscopic pores and prematurely destroy moisture adsorption capacity.
In environments containing synthetic phosphate ester lubricants, chlorinated solvents, acetone, or lacquer thinners, specify the 1716-6 Metl-Guard all-aluminum model to prevent chemical stress-crazing of transparent plastic housings.
For SG-1 Silica Gel, replace or regenerate desiccant when the visual indicator beads turn from deep blue to light pink.
Install the dryer in the coolest available location along the piping run for maximum moisture vapor condensation and adsorption capacity.
Ideal for pneumatic calibration benches, gas chromatography carrier gas drying, and critical instrument air headers.
