900 Series Vane-Operated Flow Switch
The SOR 900 Series Vane-Operated Flow Switch is an industrial-grade, magnetically actuated flow/no-flow monitoring instrument designed for direct pipeline sensing in severe processing plants, oil and gas pipelines, refineries, water utilities, and chemical plants. Engineered for pipes from 2-1/2" diameter upward, the switch is furnished with a heavy-duty 316SS vane sized for an 8-inch pipe that can be easily field-trimmed for smaller line diameters, with custom extended vanes available for larger pipe runs. Media flow displaces the vane, pivoting a 400SS or 316SS magnetic attraction sleeve inside a non-magnetic pressure barrier to trip an external snap-action switch mechanism. This magnetic coupling completely eliminates dynamic seal friction, packing maintenance, and process fluid leakage into electrical conduits. Rated for working pressures up to 1,000 psi (70 bar) and process temperatures from -65 °F to 800 °F (-54 °C to 427 °C), the 900 Series offers standard dry contact (15A @ 250 VAC), high-temperature, hermetically sealed, or mini-hermetic switch mechanisms, cast aluminum NEMA 4X or explosion-proof (Class I Groups C, D; Class II Groups F, G) housings, CSA/UL approvals, SIL 2 safety certification, and is backed by SOR's 5-year limited warranty.
Direct pipeline liquid flow/no-flow detection for lines from 2-1/2" diameter and up with field-trimmable 316SS vane
Magnetic coupling operates switch through solid pressure boundary without dynamic mechanical seals or leak paths
Working pressures up to 1,000 psi (70 bar) and operating temperatures spanning from -65 °F to 800 °F (-54 °C to 427 °C)
Minimum line pressure loss determined by streamlined vane position upon positive fluid flow actuation

Application & Field Installation Notes
Install vertically in a tee or thread-o-let on horizontal pipe runs with the flow direction aligned with the vane paddle.
Field trim the 8-inch 316SS vane using the stamped graduation marks to match the actual internal pipe diameter.
Flanged models require customer-specified nozzle height dimensions at time of order to determine correct paddle clearance.
For severe high-temperature fluid service above 450 °F (232 °C), specify Type L or S mini-hermetic switches.
Product Overview & Vane Actuation Principle
The SOR 900 Series Vane-Operated Flow Switch is an industrial workhorse for monitoring the movement of liquids in high-capacity pipelines. It is extensively deployed to safeguard expensive process equipment by detecting loss of cooling water flow, verifying lubrication circulation in turbine bearings, intermeshing chemical metering pumps, and alarming upon line rupture or valve closure.
As liquid flows past the sensor, dynamic pressure pushes against the 316SS vane paddle. The vane pivots a magnetic attraction sleeve inside a non-magnetic stainless steel pressure boundary tube. An external magnet attached to a precision electrical snap switch is attracted toward the sleeve, driving the electrical contacts from normally-open to normally-closed (or vice versa). When flow stops, the Inconel range spring and gravity return the vane to the vertical position, releasing the magnetic attraction and resetting the switch.
Magnetic force-balance operation eliminates seals, packings, and bellows, ensuring zero leakage and minimal maintenance
Vane streamlines in the direction of flow at actuation, causing negligible pressure drop in high-velocity lines
Standard 8" vane features calibrated trim marks, allowing field customization for any pipe diameter from 2-1/2" to 8"
Heavy-duty internal construction with Inconel return spring resists mechanical shock and fluid pulsing
Completely interchangeable switch mechanisms allow field conversion between dry contacts, hermetic capsules, and high-temp styles
