SOR SENSOR RAM Sampling Systems (RSS & FVRSS Series)
The SENSOR RAM Sampling System (RSS) by SOR Controls Group attaches directly to the nozzle of a process vessel, reactor, or pipeline without requiring a pump, differential pressure, or fast circulation loop. Utilizing a precision piston-type Ram Sample Valve, the system penetrates past vessel crusts and stagnant pipe walls into the active fluid stream. When the handwheel is turned, the piston retracts smoothly to allow fresh process media into the sample port; when rotated closed, the precision machined piston advances flush with the interior pipe wall, pushing all residual media back into the process line. This mechanical design delivers true zero dead volume, zero sample cross-contamination, and eliminates the root causes of valve plugging. Available in direct-bottle grab configurations (RSS) and Fixed Volume Chamber designs (FVRSS), the system can be configured with steam-heated stingers, sample coolers, emissions filter canisters, and protective enclosures.
Attaches directly to tank or pipe nozzles without requiring pressure differential or fast loop
Piston-type RAM sample valve penetrates process boundary layer and eliminates plugging
True zero dead volume: piston mechanically pushes residual product back into the process stream
Available in Fixed Volume (FVRSS) design to isolate the collection bottle from line pressure

Operational & Maintenance Guidelines
Ensure sample bottle with septum cap is properly seated in the shroud before rotating the ram valve open.
Rotate handwheel slowly until sample begins filling container; close firmly to push residue back into the line.
For high-temperature service (>135 °F), verify sample cooler cooling water flow prior to opening the ram valve.
Periodic maintenance: inspect piston seals and packing for wear; repack with Teflon or Graphoil as needed.
Direct Vessel & Pipeline Sampling with Zero Dead Volume
In many industrial processes, such as vacuum distillation towers, asphalt storage tanks, and heavy slurry transfer lines, establishing a conventional fast-loop recirculation stream is mechanically impractical or cost-prohibitive. Taking a grab sample from a standard gate or ball valve frequently leads to solid plugs forming in the dead leg between the valve seat and pipe interior.
The SENSOR RSS solves this by using an advancing piston ram that extends past the nozzle wall directly into the active flow. As the operator turns the manual handwheel, the piston retracts into the valve body to let fresh, representative media flow into the sample bottle or chamber. Upon closing, the piston travels forward until it reaches the inner boundary of the process line, expelling all leftover material back into the pipe and ensuring zero dead leg.
Eliminates dead leg accumulation and particulate blockage in stagnant nozzles
Guarantees that every grab sample reflects immediate, real-time process composition
Reduces product waste by eliminating lengthy manual pre-sample line flushing
Safe single-action operation minimizes technician time at the sample point
